I really enjoyed hearing snippets about Jennifer's long-term stay in China. Her stories were fascinating. But after the talk was over, that was the funny part. Apparently, one old lady thought Deidre and I were dating or should be dating, so she had a little talk with Deidre. Here's Deidre's side of the story:
When you (Derik) were getting food this older lady (probably in her late 60's-early 70's) came up to me (Deidre) and asked me if you were my boyfriend. And I said, no we're just good friends. And she looks at me with this weird look and said, and I quote, "Well, why not? If I was forty years younger and I had a chance at someone as cute as that I would snatch him right up!" Then she turned around and walked off.Let's hear it for old people! When I get old, I'll be making comments like that all of the time.

ha I didn't know you put this on here! that's the best story :)
Hi. I came across your blog on accident but I really enjoyed reading about all of your trips you have been on over the past few months. I feel funny writing to a stranger but I felt compelled to write to you about this particular blog. About a year before my husband and I started dating something very similar to this happened to me, only it was an older man who approached me. I laughed off the experience and didn't think much about it until later. A year later we were dating and soon after that married. 10 months after our daughter was born my husband was hit and killed by a drunk driver. I am telling you this for two reasons: 1. older people have the wisdom and intuition that young people sometimes don't have, and this woman obviously saw something between you and your friend or she wouldn't have said anything. She probably either saw that one or both of you like each other or she just saw potential for a great relationship there. and 2. We never know how many days we have left here or what the Lord has in store for our lives. I just want to encourage you to not waste time and not to shrug off what that lady saw. If you think there is anything between you two then you should go for it. I would give anything to have had that extra year with my husband. Don't take your days for granted. And don't take your friendship this young woman for granted either. I wish someone had told me that when I was your age. Good luck!
dear anonymous, thanks for reading along and posting. although i'm not sure it will be romantically in the direction of my friend, down the road, i'll be sure to remember your words for future relationships.
